Description

To demonstrate the mechanical force developed due to thermal contraction in metals ? particularly useful for studying the effects of temperature change and expansion/contraction stress. A heavy cast iron base with two fixed ends to hold cast iron rod, one end is fixed, and the other is adjustable with the hand-wheel. Bar measures 13? long, heating source and Bunsen burner not included.

• When the rod is heated (e.g., with a Bunsen burner), it expands.
• Upon cooling, the contraction builds up internal stress.

If stress exceeds the rod?s tensile strength, the rod breaks ? demonstrating the principle of thermal contraction stress.
